Our Programs

At Painted Paws for Veterans, we believe that everyone can benefit from owning or spending time with a canine companion.

We offer several programs to Veterans and the general public, including adoption services, therapy visitations and a monthly pet pantry.

Companion dogs provide a therapeutic distraction by offering something to focus on and care for, and unconditional love and emotional comfort that can relieve the feelings of anxiety and stress in people, especially those suffering from PTSD and other disabilities.
Programs and services are open to all persons regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation.

Application of Interest/Adoption

Thank you for your interest in adopting a Painted Paws for Veterans dog. Please click on the button below to take your first step in the adoption process. Our application is available as a Word document which will download to your computer, where you can save it and fill it out. After the application is completed, it can be emailed back to us at paintedpawsforveterans@gmail.com, or it can be faxed to 719-258-1330.

Completing the application does not obligate you to adopt any particular dog. Nor does it guarantee that you will be able to adopt.

Submitting an application allows us to determine your wants and needs in adopting a companion animal. It also allows us to gather other information to help match you with the right dog. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

Program Overview

Adoption Assistance

If you are interested in adopting a canine companion from an animal shelter or rescue, please contact us. We provide free adoption counseling and education to help you determine the right dog for the needs of you and your family. Then we can help you find that special dog.

Therapy Dog Visits

Painted Paws for Veterans offers therapy dog visits to local veteran facilities, service offices and hospitals, so that veterans that are away from home, or unable to own a companion animal due to their living conditions, can spend time with a canine companion.

Ranch Visits

During the warm weather months, Painted Paws for Veterans offers Ranch visits to Veterans on our forty-acre ranch in Alamogordo, NM in order to spend time with a favorite dog. Attendance is limited in order to maintain a calm, safe environment in which veterans feel comfortable.

Education

We offer educational visits to public schools, churches and libraries to educate the public on how emotional support dogs and service dogs can assist veterans, especially those with PTSD,  with re-integrating back into civilian society after military service.

Transport

Painted Paws for Veterans networks with various animal shelters and rescues in the Colorado and New Mexico area to help find available dogs that meet Veteran specifications. Whenever possible, We can assist with transport so that you don’t have to spend time driving all over the place.
